“A waterfront restaurant connected to the resort complex.”
Jessica had never mentioned going there.
Kevin explained that Richard had been treated at a medical facility away from the resort.
He had arranged his hotel checkout before the accident.
That explained his disappearance.
It didn’t explain my wife.
After the officers left, I sat staring at Jessica’s suitcase.
Her sandals stood beside the dresser. Her favorite sweater hung over a chair.
Everything looked as though she might return.
Instead, I wondered whether she’d spent her final hours choosing another man.
The following afternoon, the police returned Jessica’s recovered belongings.
Her purse and phone had been found among the items recovered from the boat.
I recognized the scratch on her phone case from when she’d dropped it in our kitchen.
There were dozens of missed calls from me.
But something else caught my attention.
Earlier that day, before she disappeared, Jessica had searched for the opening hours of a waterfront restaurant.
