The same restaurant Kevin had mentioned.
Why had she looked it up before our argument?
I decided to find out.
The restaurant stood across a sheltered inlet from our hotel. A passenger launch normally carried guests between the two docks.
A hostess named Claire recognized Jessica’s photograph.
“She came by that afternoon,” Claire said.
“Was Richard with her?”
“No. She was alone.”
“Why was she here?”
Claire hesitated.
“She wanted to arrange a special dinner for herself and her husband. She said their vacation had been wonderful, and she wanted to surprise him before they went home.”
I gripped the counter.
“Did she make a reservation?”
“They discussed a few possibilities, but she hadn’t confirmed anything.”
Jessica had been planning another romantic evening with me.
While I worried about losing her, she’d been finding ways to bring us closer.
Claire continued.
“She came back later that night with a gentleman. They had a conversation near the terrace.”
