My Husband Begged Me to Wear His New Necklace—But an Old Woman Told Me to Put It in Water First

Priya motioned for Morgan to put the call on speaker.

Evelyn continued, “I didn’t mean to frighten you. I had no way to explain without risking that he would hear. Did you do what I asked?”

“Yes. The water changed color. There was a capsule.”

A long breath traveled through the speaker. “Then I was right about the pendant.”

“Who are you?” Morgan demanded. “And how do you know Julian?”

“I used to work for a small jewelry repair business in Berwyn. A man brought in a pendant with a hidden cavity. He wanted the cavity sealed so it wouldn’t open when the chain was worn, but he also wanted it to release its contents if it got wet. He said it was a novelty piece.”

Morgan stared at Priya.

“I refused,” Evelyn said. “A week later I saw the same pendant in a photograph on a man’s phone at the shop. The man was your husband. I heard him talking about the cottage his wife wouldn’t sell. I heard enough to worry. I followed him out, but by the time I reached the street, he was gone.”
