“Keep every message from your husband,” he told her. “And if he threatens you or you think you’re in immediate danger, call emergency services.”
Morgan left without the necklace and with a case number folded inside her wallet. She felt strangely lighter and more frightened at the same time.
Next came the bus.
She remembered the route, the approximate time, and the stop where she had gotten off. Priya suggested contacting the transit authority rather than trying to obtain security footage themselves. Morgan submitted the details and asked that any relevant footage be preserved for investigators.
That afternoon, while they waited at Priya’s office, Morgan’s phone rang from an unknown number.
“Mrs. Vale?” an older voice asked.
Morgan straightened. “Who is this?”
“My name is Evelyn Brooks. We met on the bus last Thursday.”
Morgan nearly dropped the phone. “How did you get my number?”
“Your husband gave it to someone who should never have had it.”
