My Husband Begged Me to Wear His New Necklace—But an Old Woman Told Me to Put It in Water First

“Who would believe me?”

“Someone will at least take a report. And if you’re frightened of your husband, you don’t have to go back to him to prove you’re right.”

That was the sentence Morgan couldn’t stop hearing.

For years she had believed she needed proof before she could admit she was afraid. She had called Julian irresponsible, selfish, frustrated. She had never called him dangerous.

She looked at the food container on the passenger seat.

“What if the old woman knew exactly what this was?”

“Then,” Priya said, “we need to find her.”

PART 3 — THE WOMAN IN THE GREEN BERET

Morgan took the day off, something she almost never did. Her supervisor, Elaine, heard the strain in her voice and told her not to worry about the payroll reconciliation until Monday.

Priya met her at a police station. They described the necklace, showed the photographs, and explained that Morgan had not touched the water after discovering the change. An officer recorded the complaint and arranged for the container to be handled as possible evidence. He was careful not to promise what testing would show.
