My Husband Begged Me to Wear His New Necklace—But an Old Woman Told Me to Put It in Water First

“Why the bus?”

“I recognized you from the photograph. I take that route to visit my sister. I saw you board, and I couldn’t waste the chance.”

Morgan’s voice shook. “Why didn’t you tell the police?”

“I tried to tell someone what I suspected, but suspicion is all I had. The owner of the shop wouldn’t give me the customer’s paperwork. I was afraid of being accused of inventing it. I should have done more.”

“Do you know what was inside?”

“No. I never saw the finished necklace. The man described a compound that could be hidden in a capsule, but I don’t know whether he was bluffing. That’s why I told you not to wear it.”

Priya leaned toward the phone. “Ms. Brooks, I’m an attorney and Morgan’s friend. We need you to speak directly with the investigator. Are you willing?”

“Yes,” Evelyn said. “And I have something you should see. I kept a copy of the repair sketch. I knew the request wasn’t right.”
