“Eight months,” I repeated.
“I never meant for it to go this far.”
“You signed a lease.”
“I wasn’t sure what I wanted.”
“You ordered a bed for our son.”
“I wanted him to be comfortable when we separated.”
“When?”
Eric looked away.
I opened the messages again.
“You wrote that you were moving in after his birthday.”
“I didn’t want to ruin his party.”
I stared at him.
“You were going to let me bake his cake, invite his friends, and smile through his birthday while you waited to announce you’d found another woman?”
“I was trying to find the right time.”
“There isn’t a right time to secretly build a second home.”
He wiped his face. “I still care about you.”
“Then why have you spent eight months making plans without me?”
He didn’t answer.
I asked whether Rachel knew we were still married and living together.
“She knows we’re married.”
