I took out my phone and checked that the camera was ready.
My plan was to record Mason’s reaction when Tyler eventually discovered us. I imagined showing him the video afterward, laughing together as we watched his expression change from surprise to delight.
Perhaps Tyler would make a joke about having his two favorite passengers aboard.
Perhaps he would be so surprised that he would forget what he was about to say.
Whatever happened, I was certain it would become a treasured family memory.
Then the cabin door closed.
Passengers began settling into their seats, flight attendants completed their preparations, and the sounds of conversation gradually softened.
Mason reached for my hand.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“I’m really going to fly with Dad.”
I squeezed his fingers.
“Yes, sweetheart. You are.”
He smiled so brightly that I felt my heart swell.
At that moment, nothing could have made me happier.
Then the cabin speakers crackled.
