She was waiting for the breakdown she thought she had earned the right to watch.
And I understand why she wanted it. I did not at the time and I do now.
For nineteen years she has been telling a room that I think I am better than everybody, and for nineteen years the evidence for that has been that I never react.
She was not trying to hurt me on that pier. She was trying to get a reaction out of me in front of witnesses so that finally, once, somebody other than her would see me be an ordinary person who can be got at.
That is what she wanted. That is what the whole thirty-seven years has been.
And I stood there and gave her the face, one more time, in front of twenty people.
Which is the one thing on that pier that proved her right.
So I turned to Kettleman and asked him to contact harbour patrol for dive recovery of a lost item containing sensitive material, and to contact base security and request an escort.
And Kettleman said: aye, Commander.
That is the moment. Not the bag.
Her eyes went down to the silver oak leaf on my collar.
Then across to the name tape over my pocket.
Then slowly back up to my face.
For nineteen years my sister has refused to actually look at my uniform. She has looked past it, at family gatherings, the way you look past a bad haircut.
She said: what did he just call you?
Nobody answered her. That is the part I did not plan and would not have had the nerve to plan.
Twenty people on that pier and every single one of them had known for three hours what I was, and not one of them said a word, because there was nothing to say and because sailors know when to be furniture.
So the question just sat there on the concrete between us.
And then she said it again, smaller: what did he call you?
And I said: Commander.
And she said: since when.
Four years. Four years, and she has sat across a table from me twice in that time.

Nobody called Halvorsen retired from that base that week or that year. Nobody called Halvorsen works there at all.
The catering booking was fake. It came through an email address created nine days earlier, for a function room that had not been reserved, with a purchase order number that does not exist.
