“You could have told me the truth.”
Tyler looked miserable.
“I was afraid you’d leave.”
I wanted to tell him to leave immediately, but Emma deserved to understand what had happened.
“What else did Rebecca tell you?” I asked.
“She said your marriage was already over when she met Emma’s dad. She said you blamed her because you couldn’t accept that he’d stopped loving you.”
The words pierced through my heart.
“That’s not what happened.”
“I understand that now.”
I looked at Emma.
“When your father became involved with Rebecca, we were still married, living together, and raising you. I didn’t even know there was another woman.”
Emma sat down again.
“Mom…”
“Your father eventually admitted he’d been seeing her for months. I tried to repair our marriage, but he continued contacting her. Eventually, I realized I couldn’t rebuild it alone.”
Tyler shifted.
“My mom said he told her you were separated.”
