My daughter brought her first serious boyfriend to our Halloween party, and I thought he was wonderful. But when he washed off his clown makeup in my bathroom, I recognized his face. I immediately told my daughter she had to break up with him. Who was he, and why did he look so familiar?
My daughter’s boyfriend was wiping clown makeup off his face when I recognized him.
He stood at my bathroom sink, dragging a cotton pad across his cheek.
As the white paint disappeared, I noticed his dark eyebrows, the shape of his eyes, and a small scar near his chin.
I’d seen that face before. The last time was 15 years ago.
“Tyler,” I asked, “what’s your mother’s name?”
He glanced at me through the mirror.
“Rebecca. Why?”
I repeated her full name.
His hand stopped.
“How do you know my mom?”
I stepped into the hallway and called my daughter.
