“Then explain.”
He rubbed the back of his neck.
“I made a mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“Let’s not do this out here.”
I didn’t move.
“Last night, you went to Diane’s house.”
His expression changed.
“She told you?”
“She told me enough.”
“What did you ask her to do?”
Jason swallowed.
“I needed her to keep Oliver for a few hours.”
“Why?”
He hesitated.
“Because I needed you somewhere else.”
“What?”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded paper.
“I was going to tell you tonight.”
“Tell me what?”
“Give me the paper.”
He handed it to me.
There was an address, a 4:00 p.m. appointment, and the name of a financial counselor.
“What is this?”
Jason looked toward the house.
“We’re behind on the mortgage.”
I stared at him.
“How far behind?”
“Three months.”
“That’s impossible.”
Every month, money came out of our joint account.
At least, I thought it did.
