When my son’s school called to ask if someone else was supposed to pick him up, I knew something was wrong. But when I arrived and saw who was waiting for him, one question turned into a secret I never expected my own family to keep from me.
At 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, my phone rang.
The moment I saw Oliver’s school number on the screen, something felt wrong.
“Hello?”
“Hi Wendy, are you expecting someone else to pick up Oliver today?”
My hand froze around a carton of milk.
“No.”
There was a brief silence.
“Can you come to the school?”
My heart started pounding.
“Is Oliver okay?”
“He’s safe. He’s here with us. But we need you to come in.”
I grabbed my purse and left without even closing the refrigerator.
It took me 20 minutes to reach the school, and I spent every one of them imagining the worst.
