I booked myself a spa afternoon.
Then, I bought a new dress.
Not because I wanted to look thinner, but because I liked it.
When Tyler saw me wearing it, he smiled.
“You look beautiful.”
For once, there wasn’t a joke coming.
I bought a new dress.
He hesitated.
“Could I take you out for a proper birthday dinner? Just us?”
I was surprised, but I considered it.
“Only if you promise not to give a speech.”
“Not one word.”
“And no jokes about my weight.”
“Never again.”
I was surprised.

We went out that Friday.
Tyler brought flowers, listened when I spoke, and didn’t comment when I ordered dessert.
I wasn’t expecting perfection. I wanted respect.
And for the first time in a while, I felt understood.
I wanted respect.

When we got home, a package from Diane was waiting on our porch.
Inside was another pink T-shirt.
Tyler unfolded it.
