A Woman’s Granddaughter Was Drawing Their Family Tree When She Noticed a Woman She Didn’t Recognize – Then the Girl Said, ‘Mom Asked Me Not to Tell You About Her’

That stopped me cold. Vanessa had once taken money during a family crisis. Now, in another crisis, she had given it.

“That’s when I believed she’d changed,” Laura said.

Vanessa gave Laura a loaded look.

I looked at Vanessa, and she smiled shyly.

For the first time in thirteen years, I seriously considered letting my firstborn back through the door.

But something didn’t fit.

Laura kept glancing at Vanessa before answering. When Vanessa spoke for her, Laura went quiet.

And when I smiled at something Vanessa said, Laura looked more tense, not less.

“Maybe we can do Thanksgiving this year,” Vanessa said brightly.

But something didn’t fit.

“All of us,” Vanessa continued. “And Dori’s art show is coming up. I’d love to take her to another day at the studio, too.”

Laura’s shoulders climbed toward her ears.

At first I blamed nerves, but I had been warmer than she expected.
