“So you let her meet Dori.”
“I don’t deny any of it,”
“Eventually.”
I kept hearing Dori call Vanessa funny and nice. Both my girls were in my kitchen again, and despite myself, I wanted to believe it meant something.
Then Vanessa gave Laura a loaded look. Laura froze for a moment.
Then Laura said, “She helped me, Mom.”
“Helped you how?”
“She helped me, Mom.”
Laura stared at the tabletop and wrung her fingers.
“Mark lost his job in the spring. Then the roof went, and the furnace right behind it. We were drowning.”
“And you didn’t call me?”
“Because I knew what you’d do.” Her eyes came up, wet. “You’d start pulling from your retirement. And you’d tell me it was nothing.”
“She helped me, Mom.”
I opened my mouth. I closed it.
She wasn’t wrong.
“Vanessa found out,” Laura went on. “She loaned us fourteen thousand dollars. No questions.”
