Five times Daniel had promised to deliver them if he could.
He’d kept every one.
I sat on the bed.
For two years, I’d believed Sophie had rejected my attempts to reach her.
Now I was holding proof that she’d never received them.
“Why would he do this to me?” I whispered.
Sophie sat beside me.
“I think he couldn’t bear the idea of us discovering he’d lied.”
“But I was his mother. He knew how much I missed you.”
“I missed you too.”
I opened the first envelope.
I’d written it a month after Sophie disappeared.
“Dear Sophie, I don’t know what happened between you and Daniel.”
“I won’t pretend I’m not hurt or confused. But whatever happened, I still care about you.”
“You were part of our family for six years. That doesn’t disappear because your marriage ended.”
“Please let me know you’re safe. You don’t have to explain anything until you’re ready.”
