“Was it Daddy?”
Noah nodded.
“At first we didn’t know. He had his hood up. Oliver thought it was a robber, so he threw flour at him.”
Oliver spoke from behind me. “I was scared.”
“Then Lily threw some,” Noah continued. “And I did too. Daddy pulled his hood down and told us to stop.”
Now the mess made sense.
It hadn’t been an elaborate attempt at baking.
The children had been frightened by someone entering their home.
“Why?”
Noah’s voice shook. “He said Mommy would get mad if she knew he came.”
“You should never have been asked to tell that story.”
The officer nearby listened and took notes, but didn’t question Noah further.
She said investigators could arrange a proper interview if one was needed.
Outside, another officer was speaking with Fabian.
They recovered the children’s jackets from his truck and took statements about the entry and his plan to remove the children.
