“If you disagree with the evidence, speak to your attorney.”
He laughed bitterly.
“You think I haven’t? My lawyer told me some of this looks bad.”
For the first time, I understood why he’d returned.
He’d entered the house to take the folder and had remained inside while I searched for it.
After reading it, he’d decided to take the children too.
“If she gets what she’s asking for,” he said, “I’ll barely see them.”
“So you thought you’d take them across state lines without telling her?”
“They’re my children.”
“They’re not belongings you can pack into a car.”
Fabian’s face reddened. “You never liked me.”
“That’s not true.”
“You always took her side.”
“I welcomed you into my family. I helped you both when Noah was born. I wanted your marriage to work.”
“Then help me now.”
I shook my head. “Not like this.”
He stepped closer, and I felt my back touch the kitchen counter.
