Lily was already crying.
Noah took her hand. Oliver followed, clutching his stuffed rabbit.
I watched them enter the bedroom.
“Close the door, sweetheart,” I called.
I heard the lock click.
Fabian turned back toward me.
“You’ve got them hiding from their own father now?”
“They saw a man enter their house and take things while their grandmother was outside.”
“I’m not a stranger!”
“Then why did you wear a hood? Why did Noah pretend not to know you? Did you tell him to do that?”
He stopped.
I hadn’t known for certain he’d said those words.
His reaction told me enough.
Fabian dropped the blue folder onto the kitchen counter.
“She thinks this is going to destroy me.”
I looked at the folder. “What?”
“Emily. All these photographs. All these messages. Every argument we ever had.”
He opened it and pulled out several pages.
“She’s going to tell a judge I can’t look after my own children.”
