But she didn’t hug her.
Not yet.
They sat across from each other for almost two hours.
Carol didn’t make excuses.
She didn’t ask Emily to call her Mom.
She simply answered every question.
Then, just before we left, she took a small box from her bag.
Inside were dozens of birthday cards.
One for every year of Emily’s life.
None had ever been mailed.
“I wrote one every birthday,” Carol said. “Susan asked me not to contact you, and I respected that. But I needed somewhere to put the things I wanted to say.”
Emily opened the first card.
On the front was a tiny pink rabbit.
Inside, Carol had written:
“To my little girl. I hope the family I chose for you loves you enough for both of us.”
Emily broke down.
And that was when Mom walked into the café.
I hadn’t known she was coming.
