“Carol didn’t vanish,” Mom whispered. “I asked her to stay away.”
Emily stepped back.
“You did what?”
“I thought I was protecting you.”
The room went silent.
For the first time, Emily looked at Mom with real anger.
“You let me believe she abandoned me.”
Mom started crying.
“I was scared that if she came back, you would leave with her.”
Emily grabbed her jacket and walked out.
I followed.
We drove for nearly an hour without speaking.
Finally, Emily said quietly, “I want to meet her.”
Carol agreed.
Two days later, we arrived at a small café outside the city.
A woman in her late fifties was sitting alone near the window.
The moment Emily walked inside, Carol stood up.
Neither of them moved.
Then Carol covered her mouth with both hands.
“Oh my God,” she whispered. “You have my mother’s smile.”
Emily’s eyes immediately filled with tears.
