Surprisingly, it worked.
We spent our days swimming, walking along the beach, and having dinner together. Without our usual responsibilities distracting us, we remembered how to enjoy each other’s company.
One afternoon, a resort employee took our picture on the beach.
Jessica insisted on another because I’d been squinting.
“Why do you need so many pictures?” I teased.
“Because I want to remember us like this.”
That evening, she held my hand across the dinner table.
“I missed us,” she said.
“I did too.”
For the first time in months, I believed our marriage might survive.
Then we met Richard.
He was an extremely wealthy businessman staying at our resort.
He had reportedly arrived on a private jet and owned several properties overseas.
We met him at the hotel bar.
Richard was charming at first.
He bought us drinks and spoke casually about places Jessica and I could only dream of visiting.
