Richard apologized. He said he hadn’t meant to cause trouble between you two.
He’d suggested speaking somewhere quieter at the waterfront restaurant.
Jessica initially refused, but Richard kept apologizing until she agreed.
Then Owen hesitated.
“There’s something else.”
“What?”
“I heard Richard talking to another guest the previous day. He was discussing your wife.”
“What did he say?”
“He said you were lucky to have her. Then he joked that money could change a woman’s mind about almost anything.”
Owen looked uncomfortable.
“I thought he was showing off.”
I thanked him and went outside.
Richard hadn’t simply admired Jessica.
He’d decided that taking another man’s wife would prove something about himself.
And my marriage had become his challenge.
A few days later, I learned that Richard had recovered enough to leave the medical facility.
Through the contact information he’d left at the resort, I arranged to meet him at his waterfront property.
