Then he said the words that made my heart skip a beat.
“There is a very special person on this plane tonight. Someone who means absolutely everything to me.”
Mason whipped his head toward me.
His eyes grew enormous.
“Mom,” he whispered, barely containing his excitement. “HE KNOWS!”
For half a second, I believed him.
Maybe Tyler had spotted us in the terminal after all. Perhaps someone at the gate had mentioned our names. Maybe he had somehow discovered the surprise and decided to turn the tables on us.
The possibility seemed perfectly reasonable.
After all, Tyler knew us better than anyone.
I imagined him standing in the cockpit, smiling to himself as he prepared to reveal that he had known about our secret mission all along.
I pictured Mason’s face when his father announced our names to the entire cabin.
He would probably burst out of his seat, wave both arms, and shout something embarrassing like, “THAT’S ME! I’M HIS SON!”
