He worked for that airline.
Maintenance technician. Twenty-two years, out of a hangar at the same airport we had taken off from that morning — which my grandmother had known, in a departure lounge, while I was buying her a coffee.
He started there at twenty-four. There is a photograph of him at about thirty in overalls, which has been on a wall my whole life, and which I have also never asked about.
Two days before that flight, he filed a report.
Internally, on the correct form, through the correct channel, the way a man does when he has worked somewhere for twenty-two years and believes the system is a system.
I am not going to describe the component.
Partly because I do not understand it properly — I have had it explained to me twice and I could not reproduce it.
And partly because I have been asked not to, by two separate people, for two completely different reasons, and I have decided to respect both.
The report was closed eleven days later as unable to replicate.
Three words. I have seen them now, in a scan, in an email, in a font from 1998.
They are not a lie. That is what makes them so effective. Somebody went and looked and did not find it, and wrote down what happened, and the file closed itself.
He refused to board the aircraft the following week.
In front of people. At a gate, with a ticket in his hand, with four colleagues watching.
He was not being dramatic. He had tried the normal route first and the normal route had closed in two days.
He was let go within eleven days.
On grounds that had nothing to do with any of it on paper — a restructure, with four other people, which is how it is always done and which is why nothing can ever be proved.
He was fifty-eight years old. He never worked in aviation again and he never applied. He drove a delivery van for the last two years of his life and he did not complain about it once in my hearing, and I was four years old when he died, so my hearing on the subject is not worth very much at all.
And he was right.
That is the part. Not he was brave, not he was principled, although he was both.
He was correct. Technically, demonstrably, on the facts, about a physical object.
