A chill went through me.
I knew immediately who she meant, and I have thought about how I knew, and the answer is that there is only ever one he in that woman’s sentences.
My grandfather. He was called Everly and he has been gone twenty-seven years and he is the only person she has ever referred to without a name.
The pilot straightened up. For the first time he looked genuinely confused.
He said: who told you to sit here?
She did not answer straight away.
Instead she carefully opened that old brown bag, and her trembling hand went inside, and she pulled out a folded piece of paper.
Yellow with age. Not brittle — soft. The edges gone furry from being handled for decades by somebody’s thumb.
That is not a document that has been in a box. That is a document that has been taken out.
An old boarding pass.
He took it from her, carefully, with two hands, the way you take something somebody has clearly been holding for a long time.
He looked at it once. Then again, and the second look took about four seconds longer than the first.
And whatever he saw erased every trace of confusion from his face.
He looked at her. Then at seat 34A. Then back at the boarding pass.
And without another word he turned towards the front of the aircraft and called: Captain. You need to come back here.
He did not lower his voice for that. He said it the length of the cabin, and a flight attendant stopped dead in the aisle with a jug in her hand.
My grandmother stayed by the window with both hands around that faded piece of paper and did not look at any of us.
PART 4
It was not her boarding pass.
It was my grandfather’s.
From a flight in 1998. The fourteenth, out of the airport we had left that morning, on an aircraft that landed perfectly normally with about a hundred and eighty people on it.
The flight he did not get on.
And none of this is supernatural.
I want that stated plainly and early, before anybody decides this is a ghost story, because it is not one and because he would have hated that more than anything else in this account.
He was a man who filled in forms. That is the actual content of his heroism and it is not a good story and it is the true one.
