PART 3
And then I came back out into that corridor at about half past seven, and they were already there.
Not arriving. Already there, and settled — coats off, one of them holding a coffee.
Which means somebody had rung them before anybody rang me.
By the time I worked out who it was I had stopped being surprised by anything, and I am not going to name them here because they are twenty-four years old and they were frightened and they did what the family that employs them has trained everybody in that house to do.
They rang the office first. That is the protocol in that family and it has been for years and it is not written down anywhere.
Something happens, you ring the office, and the office decides who else gets told.
Four hours later a woman on a trolley used her own phone and broke that protocol for the first time in fourteen months, and that is the only reason any of this exists.
His father, Ridley, in a suit that cost more than my car. A lawyer behind him with a folder.
And about twenty people in that corridor between the nurses’ station and the lifts — two nurses, a doctor, families, a security man near the door.
Ridley came across and got hold of my wrist in front of every one of them and said:
Nobody needs to make this into a whole thing.
Nobody moved. Somebody set a cup down on the counter.
He did not let go. He leaned in and said: Colonel. Nobody needs this to become a thing.
And that was when I understood what I was standing in.
Because he was not frightened. He was not even angry.
He was mildly inconvenienced.
That was the whole of his face. A man whose Tuesday evening had been interrupted, who had come down personally — which was already generous of him — to sort something out.
And I have thought about that expression more than about anything he said, because I have seen it before, professionally, perhaps four hundred times.
It is the face of a man who has handled this category of problem so often that it has become administrative.
Not a man covering something up in a panic. A man following a procedure he did not have to invent, because somebody in that family invented it a long time ago and he has simply inherited the running of it.
