Cecilia exhaled sharply.
“This is being blown out of proportion.”
“What is?”
I kept my voice level.
“Your mother told my mom that Milo isn’t her grandson.”
Ethan went still.
Not angry.
Not at first.
Just still.
He looked at Cecilia.
“What?”
She shifted in her chair.
“I said he has his own grandparents. Alice is our granddaughter. Obviously there’s a difference.”
Ethan’s face changed.
“Say exactly what you said.”
“Ethan, don’t speak to me like I’m on trial.”
“What did you say?”
Cecilia looked at me as though I had created the problem simply by refusing to keep it private.
Finally she said, “I said he’s Alice’s brother. He isn’t our grandson.”
Ethan set the spatula on the counter.
“You STILL believe that?”
The word STILL caught me.
“What do you mean, STILL?” I asked.
Ethan looked away for a moment.
“Years ago, when you and I got serious, they asked me if I was sure I wanted to take responsibility for another man’s child.”
