My Children Share a Birthday, but My In-Laws Brought a Gift Only for My Daughter – So I Taught Them a Lesson About Family

My mother-in-law thought the problem was that I’d overheard what she said about my son. She was wrong. The real problem started when I asked her to repeat it in front of my husband.

My kids were born on the same day.

Six years apart, same date, different fathers.

Milo was nine, and Alice had just turned three.

Normally, sharing a birthday made things easier.

One cake table. One house full of balloons. One afternoon where both kids got to feel important.

That Saturday, though, I watched my mother-in-law walk through my front door carrying two gift bags.

Alice’s name was written on both tags.

Milo’s wasn’t on either.

I noticed immediately, but for a few seconds I told myself there had to be an explanation.

Maybe one bag held something for both kids.
