My 18-Year-Old Son Moved in with His Best Friend – Two Days Later, He Came Home Crying and Said, ‘Mom, I Need to Confess Something’

“I missed eighteen years without knowing it.”

Ben looked at Diane. “But she’s still my mom.”

“Of course she is. She raised you. I’m not here to erase that.”

“Then what are you here for?”

I swallowed. “A chance to get to know you.”

He looked so much like Luke that it hurt.

Ben looked down. “I don’t even know what I’m supposed to call you.”

“You don’t have to call me anything.”

“But you’re my mother.”

“I gave birth to you,” I said. “Diane is your mom. We don’t have to figure out the rest today.”

He looked at Diane.

What I’m supposed to call you.

She was crying silently.

“And if I want both of you?”

My throat tightened. “Then you get both of us.”

Ben wiped his face with his sleeve. “I think I need time.”

“So do I.”
