I’m your son?
Luke stared at me. “Why would Dad do that?”
“He was nineteen. We were broke. He was terrified.”
“So that makes it okay?”
“No.”
“Then why are you defending him?”
We were broke.
“I’m not. I’m trying to understand him.”
Luke looked at Ben. “He knew you’d say no, didn’t he?”
“Yes.”
“So he never asked.”
“No.”
I’m trying to understand him.
“He just chose for you.”
“Yes.”
Ben wiped his face. “What happens now?”
Diane immediately said, “You’re my son.”
He looked at her. “I know.”
You’re my son.
Her voice cracked. “I raised you. I love you. I’m sorry I hid those papers, but I was terrified she’d come and…”
“I’m not taking him anywhere,” I said.
Diane stopped.
I walked toward Ben.
He looked so much like Luke that it hurt.
I raised you.
