“Yes,” Emma replied.
“I was afraid you’d think I was like my mother.”
“I never thought that.”
“I know that now.”
Emma took a breath and said, “But you let me plan Thanksgiving with your family while knowing your mother didn’t want me there.”
“I thought she’d change her mind.”
“You should have told me.”
“You’re right.”
She looked toward me briefly.
“I don’t think I can stay in this relationship.”
There was a long silence.
“Because of our parents?” Tyler asked.
“No. Because you knew something important about my life and kept it from me. You let me believe we were making plans together when you were making decisions without me.”
“I’m sorry, Emma.”
“I know. But I need to be with someone who tells me the truth, even when it’s uncomfortable.”
He didn’t argue.
After they said goodbye, Emma ended the call.
She sat quietly for a moment.
