“My mom didn’t want to meet your family.”
“Because she knew who I was?”
He nodded.
Emma leaned forward.
“She knew?”
“Yes.”
“Since when?”
“Since I showed her your picture.”
“Two months ago?”
“Yes.”
Emma sat back and said, “So your mother knew about me, you knew about my family, and I was the only one who didn’t know anything?”
Tyler reached for her hand, but she pulled away.
“I wasn’t trying to hurt you,” he said.
“Then why didn’t you give me a choice?”
He had no answer.
I could see my daughter’s understanding of the relationship changing.
This wasn’t simply an uncomfortable connection between our families. For two months, Tyler had been deciding which relatives she could meet and what information she was allowed to have.
He’d let her make plans without knowing why those plans kept changing.
“Emma, I love you,” he said.
She closed her eyes.
