A terrible storm destroyed the only bridge in the village. That same night, two children disappeared into the forest. Everyone was too afraid to go after them… except one woman.
But when Mama Uganda finally found the children, they told her something that made her blood run cold:
“Mama… we saw a light coming from the old mountain.”
What was hiding there?
And why had nobody spoken about that mountain for so many years?
Mama Uganda: The Secret in the Forest
Long ago, in a small village surrounded by green hills and thick forests in Uganda, there lived a woman everyone called Mama Uganda.
She was a kind and hardworking woman. Every morning, she woke before sunrise. She collected water from the river, prepared food for her family, and helped anyone who needed her.
But Mama Uganda was known for something else.
She was never afraid to help people.
The children especially loved sitting beneath the enormous tree beside her house while she told them stories.
One evening, a little boy asked her:
“Mama, are you never afraid?”
Mama Uganda smiled.
“Of course I am afraid,” she replied.
The boy looked surprised.
“Then why are you always so brave?”
Mama Uganda looked toward the dark forest.
“Because being brave does not mean you have no fear. It means you do not allow fear to control you.”
The children remembered her words.
They did not know that they would soon see her courage for themselves.
The Storm
A few weeks later, the village experienced something terrifying.
The sky suddenly became black.
The birds disappeared.
The wind began to roar through the trees.
Then—
BOOM!
Thunder exploded above the village.
Heavy rain began falling.
Within minutes, the small river became a powerful, rushing stream.
Water entered several houses.
People ran outside, shouting and carrying their children to safety.
Then someone screamed:
“THE BRIDGE!”
Everyone turned toward the river.
The old wooden bridge was shaking violently.
Then, with a terrible crack—
CRASH!
The bridge collapsed into the river.
People on the other side were trapped.
Mama Uganda grabbed a long rope.
“Mama! Where are you going?” someone shouted.
“To help them.”
“The river is too dangerous!”
Mama Uganda looked at the raging water.
She was afraid.
But she remembered her own words.
Courage means moving forward even when you are afraid.
She tied the rope around a strong tree and stepped into the freezing water.
