I tried not to think too much about it.
But the following day, Grandpa called.
“Sweetheart, how about I take you to a café tomorrow? Just the two of us. We haven’t spent much time together lately.”
I agreed.
The next morning, he arrived in his old black car.
At first, everything seemed perfectly normal.
Grandpa asked about my job, made jokes, and told me stories from his younger days.
But halfway through the drive, he suddenly fell silent.
The smile disappeared from his face.
Then he reached over and took my hand.
“Emily, there’s something I need to tell you.”
“What’s wrong, Grandpa?”
He glanced around nervously.
“Let’s move to the back seat. We can talk more privately there.”
I frowned.
“But why can’t we talk here?”
“Please, sweetheart. It’s very important. And I don’t want anyone overhearing us.”
His voice was trembling.
