My father often joked that Grandpa loved me more than his own children.
But over the past three months, something about my grandfather had changed.
He started calling me constantly, asking whether I was home, whether I was alone, and when I would be coming back.
Several times, I even noticed his car parked across the street from our house.
Whenever I asked what he was doing there, he gave me the same answer.
“Just passing by, sweetheart.”
But I knew perfectly well that his house was on the opposite side of town.
One evening, my mother pulled me aside.
“Emily, I think you should be a little careful around Grandpa lately.”
“Why, Mom?”
She hesitated.
“He’s hiding something from us. Yesterday, I saw him withdrawing a large amount of money from the bank. When I asked him what it was for, he refused to tell me.”
