I Was 62 When I Finally Learned That I Mattered Too

“Mom, I’ve been thinking. What if we went away for a weekend? Just the two of us.”

I thought I’d misheard her.

“Just us?”

“Yes. No Noah, no Julien. Just you and me, by the sea. Only one night, because that’s all we can manage right now. But this time, it will be your vacation.”

I looked toward the wardrobe where my blue shirt was still folded in a drawer.

I hadn’t touched it since returning from our previous trip.

“Where would we go?” I asked.

“Brittany,” Claire answered. “The same place.”

I was quiet for a moment.

“I know it might sound strange,” she continued, “but I’d like us to go back and experience it differently. I don’t want that memory to stay frozen the way it is.”

I looked at the blue shirt again.

Then I smiled.

“All right.”

The weekend arrived in early September.

The sunlight was softer, and the crowds had begun to thin.
