Grandma began crying.
Then Diana told me something I wasn’t prepared to hear.
Forty-seven years earlier, when she was only fourteen, Grandma had found her alone at this same hotel.
Her mother had disappeared.
For two weeks, Grandma fed her, protected her, and promised she would never leave her alone.
Then one morning, Grandma vanished without saying goodbye.
I turned toward her.
“Why?”
Grandma whispered,
“Because your grandfather came here.”
That answer only created more questions.
Then Diana removed an old photograph from her handbag.
Two young girls were standing beside the same swimming pool.
One was Diana.
The other was my mother.
On the back, in Grandma’s handwriting, were five words:
“Diana and Susan. My girls.”
My hands started shaking.
“Grandma… why did you call Diana your girl?”
Neither woman answered.
Then Diana looked straight at me and said quietly:
“Because your grandmother still hasn’t told you what really happened here in 1979.”
Grandma suddenly grabbed my arm.
“Diana, don’t.”
But Diana had already opened another envelope.
Inside was a photograph of my grandfather with a woman I had never seen before.
And written underneath it was a date…
exactly nine months before Diana was born. 😱💔

Continuation
I stared at the date under the photograph until the numbers blurred.
Exactly nine months before Diana was born.
The woman standing beside my grandfather looked young, maybe twenty-five.
And painfully familiar.

“Who is she?” I asked.
Grandma didn’t answer.
Diana did.
“My mother.”
I looked at Grandma.
“Margaret?”
She nodded.
Suddenly, everything connected in the worst possible way.
Grandpa hadn’t come to the hotel forty-seven years ago because Grandma was “helping some stranger’s child.”
He had come because he recognized Diana.
Because he already knew exactly who she was.
“Diana is Grandpa’s daughter?” I whispered.
Grandma covered her mouth.
“Yes.”
I felt sick.
That meant Diana and my mother weren’t cousins.
They were half-sisters.
“But you knew?”
“Not at first,” Grandma said. “When I found Diana here, I only knew she was Margaret’s daughter. Then your grandfather arrived.”
Grandma said that the moment Grandpa saw fourteen-year-old Diana, his face changed.
That night, he finally confessed.
Years earlier, before my mother was born, he had secretly been seeing Margaret.
When Margaret discovered she was pregnant, she disappeared rather than destroy her sister’s marriage.
Grandpa knew about the baby.
