For seven years, my sister Stephanie babysat my ten-year-old daughter, Bev, every Friday. I trusted her completely—until one morning Bev grabbed my wrist and whispered, “Mom, I only pretend to sleep. I see what Auntie does in your bedroom.”
I thought she meant Stephanie was snooping through my things.
Then Bev said, “I’m scared she’s trying to become you.”
I didn’t understand.
For years, Fridays had belonged to Bev and Stephanie. They made pancakes, built blanket forts, painted nails, and watched movies. When I had to work late, Stephanie stepped in without hesitation. I often joked that she was Bev’s “second mom.”
I thought I was thanking my sister.
I never imagined she might hear something else.
A few weeks before Bev’s tenth birthday, she suddenly began asking me not to work Fridays.
“I don’t like Fridays anymore,” she said.
When I asked why, she only shook her head.
Eventually, she told me the truth.
“I pretend to sleep when Aunt Stephanie puts me to bed. She waits until she thinks I’m asleep, then goes into your bedroom and locks the door.”

“What does she do?”
“She wears your necklace. She sits on your bed. Sometimes she moves the picture of us.”
Bev’s eyes filled with tears.
“I thought you’d think I was making it up.”
“I believe you,” I told her.
Then she whispered, “I’m scared she wants to be you.”

That night, I placed a small camera in my bedroom.
The following Friday, I watched the footage at work.
Nine minutes after putting Bev to bed, Stephanie entered my bedroom, checked the hallway, locked the door, opened my jewelry box, and put on the necklace Bev had bought me for Mother’s Day.
Then she called someone named Terry.
“Did Bev finally go down?” Terry asked.
“Eventually,” Stephanie replied.
Then Terry asked, “Have you decided if you’re going to try again?”
Stephanie sat on my bed.
Track Pregnancy
“I don’t know. I just wanted Bev to have a sibling.”
I realized then that this wasn’t just about my bedroom or my necklace.
Stephanie had always wanted children. After years of infertility treatments and two failed procedures, she had finally given up. Instead, she had poured herself into Bev.
But apparently, she had gone much further than I knew.
