I Told My MIL Not to Pick up My 7-Year-Old from School – At 3:15, His Teacher Called the Principal

I remembered hearing him come home shortly before midnight.

“Long night?” I’d murmured.

“Yeah. I’m exhausted.”

That had been it.

“What did he want from you?”

Diane glanced at Oliver.

The principal quietly led him toward the secretary’s desk.

As soon as the door closed, I turned back to her.

“What did my husband want?”

“He needed help.”

“With what?”

“Something he’d done.”

My mouth went dry.

“What did he do?”

Diane picked up her purse.

“I think we should talk at home.”

“You’re not leaving with Oliver.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

She flinched.

The principal cleared his throat.

“Given what happened today, Diane will not be permitted to pick Oliver up unless you formally change the authorization.”

“I won’t.”

Diane closed her eyes.

“I wasn’t trying to hurt him.”

“Then why use another name?”

“I panicked.”

“About what?”

She wouldn’t answer.

I took Oliver home.

On the drive, he was unusually quiet.
