Adrian was gone.
His clothes, phone, and wallet had disappeared. There was no note, no sound from the bathroom, and no sign that he had ever been there.
Then I noticed something beside the bed.
A white envelope lay on the carpet.
My name was written across the front.
Inside were several private photographs of Adrian and me, taken without my knowledge. Beneath them was a short note.
Transfer twenty thousand dollars by noon, or the photographs will be sent to your children, neighbors, and everyone you know.
A bank account number was written at the bottom.
My hands began to shake.
But then another photograph slipped from the envelope.
It was old, yellowed at the edges, and taken more than thirty years earlier.
My late husband, Thomas, was standing in front of a warehouse beside another man. The stranger wore a silver ring identical to the one Adrian had worn the previous night.
