I Almost Threw Up on the Plane When the Obese Woman Sitting Behind Me Put Her Dirty, Smelly Bare Foot Right on My Armrest. When I Asked Her to Move It, She Laughed and Said, “My Feet Need Air. If You Don’t Like It, Sit Somewhere Else.” I’d Never Seen Such Shameless Behavior. I Decided to Teach Her a Lesson, and Soon the Entire Plane Was Laughing at Her. But When I Discovered Who That Woman Really Was and Where She Was Flying, I Wished I’d Never Done It…

I replied:

“And you reminded me that sometimes, behind a person we dislike at first sight, there’s an entire untold life story.”

Today, Linda and I are friends.

She never puts her feet on anyone else’s armrests anymore.

And she keeps that ridiculous pink sock in her bedroom,

right beside Emily’s photograph.

Sometimes, when we talk on the phone, we remember that flight and laugh together.

But I also learned something very important.

A person’s pain doesn’t excuse their rude behavior. Yet sometimes, it’s worth listening to their story, because an apology, a willingness to change, and a little human kindness can transform even the most hopeless day.

And if I had simply continued hating Linda that day, I would never have discovered how much sorrow was hidden behind her loud laughter.
