“Come alone,” Thomas said.
Daniel frowned.
“Why?”
“Because this concerns your family.”
The call ended.
Margaret Knew Something Was Wrong
Daniel stood in the kitchen for nearly a minute without moving.
Margaret eventually looked up.
“Who was that?”
Daniel turned.
He considered telling her immediately.
Then he remembered their promise.
No more secrets.
He walked into the living room and sat beside her.
“That was a man named Thomas.”
Margaret closed her book.
“What did he want?”
“He said he knew my father.”
She studied Daniel’s face.
“And?”
“He wants to meet me.”
“When?”
“Today.”
Margaret was quiet.
“Are you going?”
“I don’t know.”
She looked at him carefully.
“Why wouldn’t you?”
“He said there was something I should have been told years ago.”
Margaret’s expression softened.
“Then maybe you should hear him.”
Daniel looked surprised.
“You’re not worried?”
“Of course I’m worried.”
“Then why are you telling me to go?”
“Because if you spend the rest of your life wondering what he wanted to say, you’ll regret not finding out.”
Daniel looked down.
“You’d come with me.”
Margaret smiled.
“I didn’t say I wouldn’t.”
He laughed.
“Thomas specifically told me to come alone.”
Their Unusual Marriage Surprised Everyone But What Happened 10 Days Later Was Even More Unexpected
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
“You’re not coming?”
“No.”
She closed her book.
“But I’ll be here when you come back.”
Something about those words comforted him.
He leaned over and kissed her forehead.
“Thank you.”
“Just promise me one thing.”
“What?”
“If anything feels wrong, leave.”
Daniel nodded.
“I promise.”
The Old Community Center
The building looked almost abandoned.
The paint on the front door was peeling.
Several windows were covered with paper.
A faded sign above the entrance still carried the name of a community organization that had helped families in the neighborhood decades earlier.
Daniel parked across the street.
For a moment, he simply sat in the car.
He remembered being a teenager.
He remembered hospital corridors.
His mother’s exhausted face.
His father’s illness.
Bills piling up.
And the mysterious assistance that had appeared when the family needed it most.
He remembered the photograph of Margaret.
He had spent years believing that was the end of the story.
Now he wondered if it had only been the beginning.
Daniel entered the building.
Thomas was waiting in a small room at the back.
He was an older man with gray hair and tired eyes.
