For the first time, Margaret understood that the man she had married had been carrying a piece of her past with him for years.
And Daniel understood something equally important.
Even though his secret had come from a place of gratitude rather than deception, keeping it hidden had still created a wound.
Love, he realized, did not make a secret harmless.
Intentions mattered.
But so did honesty.
Margaret finally reached across the table and placed her hand over his.
“I believe you,” she said.
Daniel looked at her.
“But?”
Margaret gave a small smile.
“There is always a ‘but.’”
He laughed quietly.
“But I don’t want there to be anything else.”
“There isn’t.”
“Then from now on, no more secrets.”
Daniel nodded.
“No more secrets.”
She squeezed his hand.
“Good.”
And for a moment, that was enough.
But neither of them knew that the little black box had opened a door to another part of Daniel’s past.
A part he had not mentioned.
A part that would soon come looking for him.
The Phone Call
Three days later, Daniel was preparing breakfast when his phone rang.
He almost ignored it.
Their Unusual Marriage Surprised Everyone But What Happened 10 Days Later Was Even More Unexpected
But something made him answer.
“Hello?”
There was silence on the other end.
Then a man’s voice said:
“Is this Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“Daniel Carter?”
“Yes. Who is this?”
“My name is Thomas.”
Daniel stopped moving.
The voice continued.
“I knew your father.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
He turned off the stove.
“I’m sorry?”
“Your father. Michael Carter.”
Daniel’s grip tightened around the phone.
“My father has been gone for years.”
“I know.”
“Who are you?”
The man hesitated.
“I worked with him.”
Daniel glanced toward the living room.
Margaret was reading near the window.
She hadn’t noticed anything yet.
“What do you want?”
“I need to talk to you.”
“About my father?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Another pause.
“Because there is something you should have been told a long time ago.”
Daniel felt a cold sensation run through him.
“What kind of something?”
“I’d rather tell you in person.”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Thomas continued.
“I know about the community program that helped your family.”
Daniel’s eyes moved toward Margaret.
“What does that have to do with you?”
“More than you realize.”
Then the man gave him an address.
An old community center on the other side of town.
