Then I did.
The white moving truck.
Lauren’s minivan.
Mom’s SUV.
Again.
Except this time they were not at the front gate.
They had driven onto the narrow access road behind the property.
Boxes were sitting beside the fence.
The children were there.
Derek was holding a pair of heavy bolt cutters.
My entire body went cold.
“Monica.”
“I see him.”
“Did anyone authorize them?”
“Absolutely not.”
On the screen, Derek positioned the cutters around the chain securing the external barrier.
“Tell security to stop him.”
“They already have.”
He cut anyway.
The chain dropped.
Lauren immediately began directing the children toward several suitcases.
My mother stood beside the truck waving her arms as though everybody else was causing the problem.
“What are they telling you?” I asked.
“Your mother says you changed your mind last night.”
“I didn’t speak to her last night.”
“I know.”
“Call the police.”
