At Nineteen, My Mother Gave My Room to My Pregnant Twin and Told Me to Leave—Thirteen Years Later, They Pulled Up to My Estate With a Moving Truck and Said, “We’re Family. Open the Gate.”

I actually laughed.

“What do you call giving away my bedroom and telling me to leave in four days?”

“You wanted independence.”

“No. You needed that story because it sounds better.”

“Emma—”

“I didn’t spend thirteen years twisting what happened into something terrible.”

I paused.

“I spent thirteen years making what happened sound less terrible than it was.”

Then I hung up.

For the next two days, things became quieter.

I assumed they had accepted the answer.

I should have known better.

On Thursday morning, I was inspecting water damage at an elementary school when my operations manager, Monica Ruiz, called.

“Emma, are you somewhere you can look at your security cameras?”

Something in her voice made my stomach tighten.

“What happened?”

“Open camera twelve.”

I pulled up the app.

Camera twelve covered the service entrance behind our equipment building.

For several seconds, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.
