“Emily! Look what arrived!”
I covered my face.
“Oh, my goodness.”
Then, my MIL turned around.
On the back, Lauren had printed another message.
“CAKE IS NOT THE ENEMY.”
I burst out laughing!
“Oh, my goodness.”
Tyler looked like he wanted to disappear.
“Mom,” he whispered.
“What?”
“Seriously?”
She glanced at her shirt.
“Oh, don’t be such a buzzkill, sweetheart!”
Carol nearly dropped her plate!
She glanced at her shirt.
Patricia laughed so hard she had to sit down!
I was still laughing when Diane hugged me.
“Happy belated birthday, sweetheart!”
“Thank you!”
Then she whispered, “I love my son, but somebody had to teach him when to stop talking.”
I smiled.
I was still laughing.
Across the yard, my husband had quietly joined his father, Frank, at the grill.
For once, he wasn’t trying to entertain everyone.

Later that afternoon, I found Tyler sitting alone on the back steps.
