A Woman Visited Her Estranged MIL to Announce a Pregnancy – But the MIL Handed the Son a Wooden Box, and When He Looked Inside, He Cried, ‘Mom, Are You Serious?’

Her shoulders dropped.

“You’re right.”

I waited for an excuse.

I shifted in my chair.

None came.

My MIL looked directly at me.

“I thought Daniel getting married meant I was losing him. Instead of admitting I was lonely, I blamed you.”

My husband reached for my hand.

“After Thanksgiving,” Carol continued, “I kept expecting Daniel to tell me you’d changed your mind about visiting.”

“I blamed you.”

“Why would I?” I asked.

“Because I convinced myself you’d caused the argument.”

She wiped her eyes.

“Eventually, I realized I was the reason you left.”

For the first time, I believed she understood.

But I still didn’t quite understand the box.

“Why would I?”

“Why didn’t you apologize sooner?”

“Pride,” she admitted. “Then embarrassment.”

Daniel sighed.

“Mom, you could’ve called.”

“I know.”

She looked at me.

“And there’s something else I need to tell you.”

“You could’ve called.”

“Last summer, I visited Clementine.”
