I knew seeing my estranged MIL after two years of silence wouldn’t be easy, but I never expected such an emotional reunion. What she revealed that afternoon changed everything I had believed about her.
The moment my husband lifted the lid of the wooden box, his face changed. Then, he started to cry.
“Mom, are you serious?” Daniel asked, his voice breaking.
His mother, Carol, stood beside him, looking nervous.
“Daniel, what is it?” I asked.
“Mom, are you serious?”
He turned the box toward me.
I looked inside, then back at Carol.
“Oh my God,” I whispered. “It’s beautiful.”
I was 30, 12 weeks pregnant, and sitting across from a woman who hadn’t spoken to me in two years.
Inside the box was something I’d seen before, although I couldn’t remember where.
“It’s beautiful.”
Daniel closed the lid.
“Mom, where did you get this?”
“I’ve always had it.”
He wiped his eyes.
